BOSTON - The new chief executive of Sovereign Bancorp Inc. will earn up to nearly $2 million a year in salary and bonus payments, according to a statement filed with federal regulators.

Sovereign CEO Joe Campanelli, a Wellesley resident, was promoted to the bank's top job on an interim basis last fall after his previous boss, longtime Sovereign chief Jay Sidhu, resigned. The company's board appointed Campanelli to be the official successor to Sidhu in January.
