The Institute of Medicine last week called for greater efforts to
monitor and control indoor allergens - substances inside buildings
that can trigger allergic reactions - saying the problem endangers
health and increases the nation's medical costs by as much as $6
billion a year.
"To the extent that people spend much of their lives indoors, it
clearly makes sense to focus on airborne allergens in that
environment in an effort to control them," said Roy Patterson, chief
of the allergy-immunology division of Northwestern University Medical
School and chairman of the institute panel that compiled the report.
