Article: School may offer sign language instruction

Marshfield High School may have a new world language offering next year: American Sign Language.

Administrators proposed the course, American Sign Language I and Deaf Culture, to the school committee this week. A decision is expected on May 22.

If approved, the course would be offered next fall to 60 students. It would be an alternative for students who have difficulty learning spoken languages and an elective for others.

Administrators say about 120 students have already requested the sign language course, including 15 recommended by their foreign language teachers. The other 45 students would be selected by lottery.
