The Senate recently voted to make New Hampshire the third state, along with Vermont and Alaska, to allow virtually anyone to carry a concealed weapon. No permit or license required.

The change is being made at the behest of the Gun Owners of New Hampshire, the local affiliate of the National Rifle Association. The New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police opposes it. Gov. Craig Benson supports it. The police chiefs are right.

Current law requires local authorities to grant a permit to carry within 14 days unless the applicant is found to be a felon, mentally ill or otherwise unfit to wield the life and death power inherent in a loaded weapon.
