A number of correspondents have taken us to task lately for introducing paid obituaries. I'm writing to respond and to update readers on other changes in the paper, both recent and upcoming.

I'll take up obituaries first, followed by the weather page, better TV coverage and finally the redesign of the news pages that I announced about a year ago.

The critics of our new obituaries raise several objections, the most basic being that we are compounding the loss of death by taking money from bereaved families.

I wouldn't expect anyone to be pleased with paying for something that once was free. That said, I am comfortable with this change.
