A 13-member committee made up of residents from each of the Merrimack Valley School District towns has assessed the needs of the district's schools. It put Loudon Elementary and Merrimack Valley middle and high schools atop the to-do list; the school board agrees. Here's why:

The original school was built in the mid-1800s, though it's had several additions, most recently in 2000.

About 400 students now attend, which is about a third of the total elementary school population in the district.

Proposal would add: 20,609 square feet; 1,139 square feet would be renovated.

Cost estimate: Between $3.4 million and $4 million
