Article: State school board might abandon neutrality Panel could endorse definition of adequate education

The state Board of Education has been the Switzerland of the state's school funding wars over the last seven years, remaining neutral and silent throughout the combat at the State House. But that may begin to change, starting today, said its chairman, Fred Bramante.

The Coalition for an Adequate Education, representing 85 school and municipal boards, has been working quietly for months to reach agreement on a new definition of the state's role in public education. The definition, which hasn't been released yet, is the first step toward the 2-year-old group's ambitious goal - to force the state to pay for an "adequate" education for every student, as the constitution requires.
