hroughout history, bread has been the cornerstone of the human
diet. This staple is mentioned in all of the religious texts and was
found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There was even a bakers'guild formed
in Rome around 168 B.C.
In 1910, 70 percent of the bread in the United States was made at
home. It is not hard to imagine what that percentage is today. Since
the introduction of sliced bread in 1928, home cooks have found it
more convenient to buy their bread than to make it themselves.
"Our world is fast-paced, and people look for instant
gratification," said Debbie Durkee, pastry chef at the Canterbury
