More than a decade after he blew away hitters for Trinity High, two obvious points have emerged concerning pitcher Chris Carpenter.

One, when healthy, he's very, very good. And two, Carpenter, unfortunately, is one of those pitchers you hold your breath for each time he uncorks one home.

An arm injury is forever a possibility. That's simply the sad truth. It happened three years ago with the Blue Jays, and it occurred again late last season, when Carpenter, the Cardinals' No. 1 pitcher through the summer, went down again as the playoffs approached.

He missed the entire postseason, including the World Series against the Red Sox.
