NEW LONDON - As they planned their new home, Gary and Cicely
Markoff imagined walking out their back door on a Sunday morning
after a fresh snowfall, strapping on cross country skis and stepping
onto the trails that crossed their property as part of the network
for the Norsk cross-country ski area.
The frame of the house is up now, but the picture they had of
their lives on the trail has faded. Norsk owners John and Maureen
Chiarella announced recently they will not open the ski area next
year.
John Chiarella said the couple has put long hours and hard work -
immense "sweat equity"as he put it - into Norsk without seeing the
