When the insurance company Terry Penny works for started offering identity theft coverage this year, Penny signed herself up. Computer hackers had stolen her BJ's card number the year before and racked up charges in her name. Penny didn't have to pay for the false charges, but the incident was a wake-up call.

"I didn't know until I got my statement and I saw all these charges from Texas and Louisiana," said Penny, who works in the Concord office of the Foy Insurance Group. "It really is the No. 1 white-collar crime. It's growing."
