David Moats of the RutlandHerald in Vermont won the 2001 Pulitzer
Prize for editorial writing for his editorials on his state's debate
on gay and lesbian civil unions.
With New Hampshire's Legislature about to take up a proposed
constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a
woman, Monitor Editor Mike Pride interviewed Moats by e-mail about
civil unions in Vermont.
When did the Vermont law take effect?
July 1, 2000. The first civil union took place at midnight, July
1, in Brattleboro.
