The woman who brought potpourri to Washington was calling it quits.

Word spread quickly among alarmed cognoscenti this week that Dolly Kay was closing her shop after 18 years. Some were calling it the final blow to Washington's carriage trade, where the carriages of choice are mostly Mercedeses, Jaguars and BMWs. There was also the occasional limo that idled in front of the tiny shop of luxuries tucked incongruously between the Lord & Taylor parking lot and a Metrobus garage in Friendship Heights.

"Everything has changed," says Kay, who publicly announced she would be closing in a newspaper ad Monday addressed to "my dear friends."
