Former president Bill Clinton defended New Hampshire's first-in- the-nation primary yesterday, saying he strongly opposes a plan by national Democrats to add an early contest to the presidential- nominating calendar.

On a visit to the state, Clinton also said his wife shares his firm support for New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is considered a likely contender for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

"They should leave Iowa and New Hampshire alone," Clinton said. "I've been really clear about it."
