Article: Budget committee wants to cut school spending; Reductions could be felt in athletics

The Hopkinton Budget Committee approved the town's operating budget as proposed but will recommend cutting the school board budget by $140,000.

"I'm not surprised. I think they had their minds made up before they went into that meeting," School Superintendent Brian Blake said after Wednesday's budget committee vote.

The school originally presented a $15.1 million operating budget plus a warrant article for a $427,000 facilities renovations project. This brought total spending up by 8 percent. The budget committee had requested that both the town and the school keep spending increases to 3.8 percent.
