A steamy day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards yielded Cal Ripken's
2,000th career hit and more heroics by Chris Hoiles and Fernando
Valenzuela. It also ended with another victory for the hard-charging
Baltimore Orioles, who inched closer to first place in the top-heavy
American League East with a 6-0 triumph over the Chicago White Sox in
front of 45,368 sweat-drenched patrons.
It was too hot for a spotlight, with a game-time temperature of
101 degrees. But had there been one, a few Orioles would have been
sharing it.
Valenzuela was the afternoon's central figure, continuing an ever-
more-amazing pitching surge with an eight-inning, two-hit, four-walk
