If people still have doubts that Major League Baseball is big
business, even after observing last week's All-Star festivities in
Baltimore, then nothing will convince them that it's more than just a
game.
All-Star Week embodied the very essence of major league baseball:
big business packaged, marketed and promoted purely as entertainment.
Entertainment, All-Star style, generated a boffo business for Major
League Baseball and all of its licensed manufacturers of sports gear
that set up shop in Baltimore last week.
Whether they realized it or not, fans who bought tickets to the
game, and the 115,000 who paid $12 each for admission to "FanFest"
(baseball's version of a shopping mall filled ...
