Article: Carpenter's ex takes stand Girlfriend remembers final call from victim

Pen Meyer of Goshen was murdered because of her support for a friend, prosecutors have said. Yesterday, that friend, Sandra Merritt, took the stand and talked about her last conversation with Meyer on the day she went missing.

Meyer had encouraged Merritt to break up with her boyfriend, Ken Carpenter of Lempster. But early on the morning of Feb. 23, 2005, Meyer called Merritt at work and urged her to get back together with Carpenter.

"It was a complete change from anything she ever had supported or approved or I knew about her," Meyer said.
