During the longest economic boom since World War II, Yakima County
held its own in the 1990s, according to newly released U.S. Census
data.
In statistics that seem to defy conventional wisdom, rampant
poverty and a slumping agricultural economy, more county residents
were better off in 2000 than a decade earlier.
Make no mistake, however. Poverty levels remain among the highest
in the state and average wages still lag far behind those in Puget
Sound.
But as those Puget Sound wages zoomed ahead, Yakima County kept
pace.
