SPOKANE - Obstacles stood in his way, but Wally Hagin knocked them
down.
He didn't put up with people who slammed doors in his face, who
belittled him for the color of his skin. He wouldn't allow anyone to
break his spirit.
As a black man living in Spokane before the civil rights era,
Hagin stood up for equality - not just for himself and other African
Americans, but for all people of color who faced discrimination.
Because of his lifetime work, which included documenting the
history of Spokane's black community in photos, the 87-year-old Hagin
was honored recently with the Carl Maxey Racial Justice Award. The
prize from the YWCA of Spokane is named after the late civil ...
