Article: Yakima River Basin -- Steelhead's Improvement Still Falls Short

A review by federal scientists suggests populations of Middle Columbia River steelhead - which includes the Yakima River Basin - are showing signs of improvement.

But the fish still aren't doing well enough to change their status as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, according to a preliminary conclusion by the scientists.

The evaluation, the first since some species were listed more than a decade ago, found that none of the 26 populations of currently designated West Coast salmon and steelhead stocks warrants upgrading their status. In fact, three of those 26 stocks are doing worse.
