Article: Editorial -- Paid-Leave Legislation Reaches Beyond Where Public Policy Should Go

Legislation that would mandate paid time off for all workers should be stopped in its tracks during the current legislative session in Olympia. And while they're at it, lawmakers should revisit and scrap a new law approved last year that started this slide toward greatly expanding the scope and purpose of paid leave.

In both cases, lawmakers are meddling with private-sector benefits best left to the bargaining table or negotiations between employer and employee. It is not something that should be mandated in state law.

This year's effort - House Bill 1221 - remains with the House Commerce and Labor Committee after a hearing Thursday. Let's hope it stays there.
