Article: Seneca Seeks Bucks for Starbucks - Judge says juicemaker can proceed with $1.5 million suit involving concentrate for Prosser plant

A Yakima County judge on Wednesday allowed a juicemaker's lawsuit to proceed against Starbucks Corp., the world's largest specialty coffee company.

Seneca Foods Corp. claims that Starbucks owes more than $1.5 million for raw materials that went unused when customer demand lagged for a juice-based ice drink sold exclusively at many of the coffee firm's nearly 4,000 U.S. stores.

Starbucks contends that Seneca simply ordered too much inventory for the Prosser juice plant based on a false impression of demand for the juice drinks.

"The question is who is responsible," Starbucks attorney David F. Taylor of Seattle said during a hearing where he sought to have Seneca's claims thrown out.
