KENNEWICK - A last-second flurry before halftime shook Yakima Valley Community College out of its first-half doldrums and was all the Yaks needed to spur their opening-round victory in the NWAACC Tournament.

Scoring five points in the final five seconds, YVCC pushed its halftime lead to 10 and that spurred a solid second half as it defeated South Puget Sound 75-54 Friday night at the Tri-Cites Coliseum.

The Yaks play Whatcom Community College at 6 p.m. in one of today's quarterfinals. Whatcom defeated YVCC in a game last December.

YVCC started out slow, falling behind 8-2 at the outset and struggled for most of the first half.
