MABTON - Maribel Tovar understands the strength of the rays of the
sun.
She's worked outdoors in summer alongside her parents and siblings
since she was 10, picking cherries, grapes, pears, apples, apricots,
plums, blueberries and raspberries.
She's harvested fruit in temperatures soaring into the 90s.
"You get tired," Tovar says. "The first couple of days your back
aches. You get a headache from the sun."
But, "after awhile, you don't notice," she says. "It keeps you in
shape."
Outside of harvest season - when she's camped in Wenatchee, or
sorted raspberries in a warehouse in Lynden - Tovar's lived in Mabton
all her life.
The petite, doe-eyed 17-year-old is looking for work indoors this ...
