Five years ago, April Kaupilla was on a downward spiral of self-
destruction. She was a young mother living with an abusive boyfriend,
the father of her 3-month-old baby.
One day, at home with the kids, she received a phone call: Someone
had spotted her boyfriend with another woman. Furious, she hunted
them down and publicly assaulted them, just blocks from a police
station. Within minutes, she was arrested and charged with
perpetrating domestic violence. A court ordered her to get treatment.
"As a woman, being a perpetrator myself, I was going to hit him
first," says Kaupilla, 30, of Yakima. "I lacked so much self-
