WALLA WALLA -- If barrel samplings are to wine enthusiasts what prerelease screenings are to cinema junkies, the Walla Walla Valley is shaping up to be the Cannes of Washington this weekend.

Forty-nine of 60 wineries will open their doors Saturday and Sunday in the area's ninth annual Holiday Barrel Tasting event to give visitors a preview of wines still aging in the barrel. Most will also be open Friday.

In keeping with the festivity of film premieres, the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance is gussying up for its first opening night event 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Whitman College's for people who buy a "Backstage Pass."
