For years after I started fly-fishing, I always fished dry. I
mean, I fished on top, not that I wasn't drinking. (I wasn't, but
that's not what I meant.)
It wasn't that I was a dry-fly snob; back then, if I wanted to
fish deep, I just got out my spinning outfit and used it. I put away
my spinning rig for good quite a few years ago. Now if I want to fish
deep, I get out my nymph rig. I will put lead split shot on my
leader if necessary and, yes, I still consider it fly-fishing.
There are different ways to nymph. I almost always do it the same
way; with an indicator (spin fishermen call them bobbers -- there
isn't really much difference) and, if necessary, split shot. Most of
