Article: Cherry orchard growing into golf course

CRESCENT BAR, Wash. -- Ed Kane always knew the 32 acres where he grew cherries at Crescent Bar would one day find a better use. After all, the view from his land of the rugged basalt cliffs and the Columbia River gorge is spectacular.

"I always figured someone would come along and want to develop it," said the 69-year-old Kane of the land on the bend in the river just west of Quincy. But no one ever did, at least not with the right amount of money.

So Kane, who lives in Malaga, near Wenatchee, and a couple of partners decided to do it themselves.

Where the orchard once was, a fleet of heavy equipment now contours the dirt for what is being billed as a $50 ...
