Article: State poet laureate? Finally it's a pretty good bet

It's not the first time poetic verse and legal fine print have crossed paths in the Washington Legislature, but a new bill that would establish a state poet laureate is just a few steps short of merging the two permanently.

House Bill 1279, establishing the poet laureate program, passed with an overwhelming 90-5 vote Feb. 5 and is awaiting approval from the Senate.

"Hopefully it'll make it all the way through the governor's office," said bill sponsor Rep. Mary Skinner, R-Yakima. "I think it will fare well because we're going to work with the folks over there (in the Senate)."
