The Rev. Canon Frank Clayton Matthews was ordained and consecrated
as the Episcopal Church's newest bishop in Virginia last week in a
ceremony in Washington National Cathedral.
Hundreds of Episcopalians from throughout Virginia, including many
from Northern Virginia, gathered to affirm the ministry of Matthews,
who is well known in the diocese. The Virginia diocese has 77,000
members and is the third largest in the Episcopal Church.
Matthews, 45, a native of Raleigh, N.C., has spent most of his
ordained ministry in Virginia. He has served as chief clergy
assistant to Bishop Peter James Lee since 1967. As rector of Emmanuel
