SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- Local religious leaders led a march across
the Genentech campus Wednesday, pushing for improved living
standards for the company's food service workers.
The procession of union supporters sang "We Shall Overcome," as
clergy members pressed Genentech officials to support a code of
conduct and reverse the recent firing of a cashier and union
activist at the company's headquarters.
At issue is the treatment of workers whocook and serve food in
Genentech's cafeterias, but are contract workers employed by
Guckenheimer Enterprises of Redwood Shores.
The union Unite Here is trying to organize the 150 cafeteria
workers at Genentech, as well as hundreds more in San Mateo ...
