Article: Why we need so many new homes

THE GOVERNMENT is planning to build three million new homes in England. This is not enough, according to a report from the National Housing and Planning Advice Unit, which advises ministers. It says at least 270,000 more would be required to meet demand. Average prices in England are more than seven times average annual salaries. The Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, is already threatening councils with draconian sanctions, including restricting their say over planning decisions, if they fail to provide the number of new homes she wants.
