With his football team back in the top 10 of the college rankings
for the first time in six years, John Cooper's popularity as Ohio
State University's football coach is the highest it's been.
Trouble is, at a school where Woody Hayes made Big Ten
championships the norm and national championships an annual
flirtation, the summit Cooper currently occupies is a treacherous
precipice.
"I'm keeping things in perspective," said Cooper, whose Buckeyes
are 3-0 after victories over Rice, Washington and Pittsburgh and
stand seventh in the Associated Press rankings. "You're only as good
as your last game, and humility is always a week away."
