Article: Baseball, mom and; .; .; .; Apple pie is a fall classic that gets special treatment from area chefs

The thought came to Jan Kelly as she chatted with a customer.

"She was talking about how they go to the farmers market, and she bakes an apple pie every weekend. I was like, that is such a great fall thing. There's so many things you can do with them," says Kelly, the chef at Meritage. "It got me thinking."

Kelly thought about all the things a chef can do with beautiful fall apples, and she had been leafing through recipes "to see what I haven't done in a while."

Then she thought, " 'Why not just a nice apple pie?' But I'll do it a little different."

She promptly put her own mark on it: a blend of Macintosh apples, apricots, cherries, spices and sour cream (more on that later).
