A leaked Government plan to convince shoppers to buy UHT milk
instead of a fresh pinta to cut the carbon count was yesterday
dismissed by the minister in charge as a "load of old bullocks",
writes Matt Chorley, London Editor.
Food and Farming Minister Jonathan Shaw claimed the idea that the
amount of UHT milk should be increased to cut CO2 emissions was not
Government policy, "never has and never will be".
The document - drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs - suggested farmers and supermarkets encourage
shoppers to buy long-life milk to help cut the carbon emissions from
in-store refrigerators.
