The powers-that-be at the National Theatre clearly take a rather robust view of what constitutes suitable entertainment for children in the run-up to Christmas. Last year they gave them Coram Boy, which featured a horrifyingly realistic hanging and a number of new- born babies being butchered or buried alive.

This year's festive treat is War Horse, which offers a gritty, uncompromising account of how a young man and his horse fare on the Western Front during the First World War. There is a scene of a cavalry division being blown to pieces that recalled for me the carnage of the IRA bomb blast that ripped the Blues and Royals to pieces in London in 1982.
