Kellie and Kirk Utzinger celebrated their son Kole's birthday
recently by eating lunch with him at Maxwell Elementary School.
"Everyone around him had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,"
said Kellie Utzinger, of Hempfield. "It kind of made me nervous.
What mom doesn't make peanut butter and jelly? It's the easiest."
Such an easy lunch could prove disastrous for 9-year-old Kole,
who is allergic to peanuts.
He's not alone. About 12 million Americans have food allergies,
and the number appears to be increasing both nationwide and here in
Western Pennsylvania, where schools are responding to the growing
concern.
