OAKLAND -- The murder of then-Your Black Muslim Bakery leader
Antar Bey two years ago was a simple carjacking gone wrong, fueled
by the suspect's desire to get new rims for his girlfriend's car,
the prosecutor in the murder trial said Monday.
When murder suspect Alfonza Phillips, now 22, saw Bey drive his
745i BMW into a 76 Union gas station on Martin Luther King Jr. Way
on Oct. 25, 2005, he saw the perfect opportunity to score a prize in
his roughly three-week-long tryst, Deputy District Attorney Colleen
McMahon said during opening statements in the trial.
"He had his eyes on Antar, but he really had his eyes on that
fancy car with those fancy rims," McMahon said.
