Evidence that Scots are getting fitter emerged with new figures
that show the number of people dying from heart attacks and strokes
is continuing to fall.
New NHS figures show death rates among under-75s from coronary
heart disease - the main cause of premature death in Scotland -
fell by 8.4% last year, from 67.5 per 100,000 head of population in
2005 to 61.6 in 2006.
Death rates among all age groups from cerebrovascular disease,
which includes strokes, fell 7% from 67.6 deaths per 100,000
population to 62.9.
Health and Wellbeing Secretary Nicola Sturgeon welcomed the
decline but warned against complacency, pointing out that the death
rates were still the highest in western Europe.
