The horrific stories and images of last week's earthquake in India
are spurring hundreds of people in the Washington area to ask how
they can help, according to relief agencies and Indian American fund-
raising organizations.
The American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services and other
agencies are organizing national drives for contributions of cash and
supplies. Locally, the tragedy has galvanized the Indian American
community to raise money quickly and get it to relief organizations
in India.
A network of about 100 Indian American civic organizations and
social clubs in the area has set up phone trees and fax chains to
solicit money from the 35,000 people of Indian descent estimated to ...
