Article: Number of Poor Americans Rises for 3rd Year; 36.9 Million Live in Poverty and 37.4 Million Lack Health Insurance, Census Bureau Says

The number of impoverished Americans rose for the third year in a row in 1992, to 36.9 million, the Census Bureau reported yesterday. At the same time, the number of Americans without health insurance grew to 37.4 million, or 14.7 percent of the population.

Despite larger numbers of poor people, however, the Census Bureau said the increase - from 14.2 percent of the population in 1991 to 14.5 percent in 1992 - was statistically insignificant.

Median income - the point at which half the households have a higher income and half a lower income - also remained virtually unchanged at $30,786.

Nonetheless, the poverty percentages recorded over the past three years are higher than at any time ...
