A Merrimack County jail guard has been indicted on three counts
of simple assault for allegedly pushing, knocking down and grabbing
the throat of an inmate. The guard, Shawn Cunningham, 43, of
Franklin was fired in 1996 from the Hillsborough County jail days
after allegedly punching and kicking an inmate there.
Cunningham was also cited in 1989 by Hillsborough County
officials for violating their jail policies by corresponding with
female inmates by telephone and mail, according to a news report.
It was unclear yesterday how much, if anything, Merrimack County
jail officials knew about Cunningham's past when they hired him Jan.
