Bishop H. Hartford Brookins, leader of the African Methodist
Episcopal Church in the Washington region and a political power
broker, plans to resign from his post next month under pressure from
ministers and lay leaders who accuse him of misusing church funds,
high-ranking church officials said yesterday.
Similar unresolved allegations of financial impropriety involving
hundreds of thousands of dollars also dogged Brookins at his previous
postings as presiding bishop in Los Angeles and Arkansas. But the
national AME church's Council of Bishops decided at a meeting in
Atlanta Monday that Brookins will remain a bishop and probably be
