France Reconsiders Sunday Sales Ban

Practically every Sunday for the past three years, Gerard Filoche, a dogged, 47-year-old inspector from the Ministry of Labor, has made life miserable for the merchants of Paris's central Marais district.

Stores there are open for business as usual on Sunday - in violation of French law.

In three years Filoche has handed out about 300 fines to 40 stores, enough to earn him a reputation as one of the government's most ferocious crusaders.

"I'm just doing my job as a civil servant," Filoche said of his enforcement of the 1906 law that bars French businesses from employing workers on Sunday.
