The Washington Post yesterday named Michael Getler, assistant
managing editor for foreign news, to the newly created position of
deputy managing editor, the newsroom's third-ranking post.
Getler, 58, headed a newsroom task force that criticized The Post
for a "confrontational and male-dominated" culture in which
minorities "do not seem to rise through the ranks." Its 90-page
report made dozens of recommendations about recruitment, training and
career development and said a deputy managing editor should be named
to oversee these issues.
Getler, who will remain involved in the daily news operation, said
