Article: Monday Is Target on Palmeiro; Orioles Polishing $27.5 Million Offer

The Baltimore Orioles and free agent first baseman Rafael Palmeiro essentially have agreed to a five-year contract worth about $27.5 million, sources said last night. But the two sides again yesterday remained unable to apply the finishing touches to the apparently all- but-done deal, with one source saying that "one or two critical components need to be resolved."

General Manager Roland Hemond said last night the deal is not yet completed, but he insisted that all is well in the negotiations.

"It's not finalized," Hemond said. "I doubt it will be {last night}. We're proceeding cordially. There are no problems, and it should not be assumed that there are problems just because it's not done. ...
