Article: Orioles, Palmeiro Reach Deal; Jubilant Oates Already Has First Baseman `Hitting Third'

The Baltimore Orioles last night officially reached a contract agreement with free agent first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, ending several days of haggling over the final details of a transaction that may have turned the team into a legitimate World Series contender for next season.

Details were not announced, but sources said the five-year contract will pay the 29-year-old Palmeiro $30 million. About $7.5 million of that apparently will be in the form of deferred compensation, however, and Orioles officials said privately they consider the practical value of the deal - after adjusting for inflation - to be between $27 million and $28 million.
