The future of this shell-battered, besieged city - whether it is
to be formally divided as Berlin was after World War II - has become
perhaps the most contentious issue in the negotiations, due to resume
Tuesday, on a settlement of the Bosnian civil war.
In the war here among Muslims, Serbs and Croats, the fight for the
future of Sarajevo is now partly a battle over whether the agreed-to
dismemberment of Bosnia will be permanent or reversible. Keeping
Sarajevo intact, and thus preserving Bosnia's last bastion of multi-
ethnic cohabitation, is seen as a way to permit a possible future
national reconciliation and reintegration.
