Yesterday Ledell Eackles sat on the sideline at Bowie State University, his right hand taped up. He wasn't allowed to practice because a Roman candle went off in his hand Monday night.

A . . . Roman . . . candle.

He made the trip with the team to New Jersey, where the Bullets play a suddenly hot Nets team tonight at Brendan Byrne Arena. His status is probable, and Washington needs him. Tom Hammonds is on the injured list and out for the month, and Eackles is the backup small forward to Harvey Grant, who desperately needs to get some rest
